People often come to me, (mostly women) and ask if they should carry pepper pray, a stun gun or a knife if they aren't allowed, cant afford or aren't comfortable with a handgun.
After years of experience and research my feeling is most pepper sprays are far less powerful or even ineffective in a cold environment partially due to the pores being constricted. Along with that, wind also drastically effects the aerosol-like spray of most pepper spray. This can cause you to become more incapacitated than your attacker! So in general, I advise against traditional pepper spray.
Stun guns and tasers are intimidating and can be very effective. However, you have to get way too close to your attacker. Tasers only incapacitate them while they are being shocked, as soon as it is over they have recovered 100%, not giving you enough time to get away and remove yourself from the situation. Along with that you can be over powered and have it taken from you (due to the necessary proximity between you and your attacker). So unless you are a police officer or security guard authorized and trained in tasers (stun guns are not practical) I advise against carrying one for protection.
In the right hands, knives can be a incredible defensive weapon. However, if you are again not expertly trained, you can be easily overpowered and have the knife taken from you and used against you. I have disarmed several men wielding a knife trying to attack me or people around me and if you know how to do it, it is quite easy. That being said - you once again have to get way too close to your attacker to use a knife. Also if your not expertly trained , you are asking to be a victim because attackers choose the easiest looking target.
It is true that merely brandishing any of these weapons MIGHT be enough to scare off an attacker. But what if its not? You have to be ready to defend yourself with whatever it is you have and by whatever means necessary. The best way to avoid being attacked is to not get yourself into the situation in the first place. But if you find yourself in that situation, it is better to have at least basic real world training in defensive tactics.
Attackers that are being beat on by their victim usually become disoriented immediately , not expecting their victim to fight back. All you have to do is land one or two incapacitating blows and they are on the ground as you are moving in the other direction towards safety.
Emergency Survival Geeks has two levels of real world defensive tactics courses that we offer. Anyone can learn and the classes are inexpensive (whats your life worth) You can choose to be in a female only rape prevention- and basic defensive tactics course or a mixed gender course. We also offer an advanced course covering topics like weapons disarming.
If you don't have the time, cant afford the course or know that you don't have it in you to fight back. the product that we recommend is the Kimber pepper blaster (available under the Geek's Gear tab). This product is far superior to traditional pepper spray because the spray leaves the device at 112mph and is effective to 13ft (instead of just a few feet like most pepper spray). Due to the velocity the solution leaves the device at, it is also far more effective in windy conditions. It's THREE TIMES more effective than traditional spray, because it is a more concentrated irritant solution than most other products on the market and the velocity that it hits with accelerates its effects and forces it deeper into cold weather caused constricted pores. It is not pressurized like traditional pepper spray so it doesn't loose pressure over time and the shelf life is longer than any traditional pepper spray at 4 years. The device gives you 2 super
concentrated, high velocity shots. The manufacturer states one shot to the face is enough to incapacitate an attacker for about 45 min! So if you miss on the first shot or have multiple attackers you have 2 chances. Being as most animal's sense of smell is hundreds of times more acute then a human's this product will likely work on mean dogs or any aggressive woodland creature. Using a Kimber pepper blaster in a animal attack is no doubt better than nothing and is likely to create a lasting impression on the creature preventing more potentially dangerous encounters with humans. ( If you expect to encounter bears, bear spray is recommended over this product and will be far more effective - even more so than a firearm statistics show)
